Today we
visited the Academie des Beaux Arts where students study various means of
visual art. I bought a couple paintings and earrings made from wood. Then we
stopped at the Marche de Artistes de Royal, which is a small market devoted
entirely to artists selling wooden sculptures, paintings, statues of malachite,
cooper plates, rugs made from raffia, wooden masks, and row after row of jewelry.
I two beautiful wooden statues and a rug of raffia.

We were planning to have dinner
at Clement’s parents, but getting there was quite an ordeal. Patrick had to
avoid numerous traffic jams. Traffic is just impossible to describe because
there are no rules or system of navigation. Finally we got to the (relative)
safety of Clement’s neighbourhood and the entire street was packed with people
on foot for a mourning. Francoise served us fish, beef, fufu, rice, amaranth
leaves. I loved the beef and, of course, the fufu! The amaranth leaves tasted
rather bitter but were somewhat better than cassava leaves. After dinner,
Clement brought out the gifts she had brought home to her family. It was
another dinner without electricity and tonight we talked about how children
here do not work during their school years unless they are very poor and the
price of beef is $5/lb. Clement’s mom speaks four languages fluently and
understands some English! Amazing.
